Nicawaves House Rental :: Popoyo, Nicaragua

Driving down southwestern Nicaragua, dirt roads lead you to the coastal town of Popoyo.  Whizzing by Nicaraguans clad in rash guards and board shorts, signs pepper the road directing you to hostels, hotels, and restaurants located on the main strip.

If you are looking for a place to crash that shies away from it’s overpriced and touristy counterparts, Nicawaves is the perfect place to rest after a day’s surf.  Offering house and room rentals that are only 3/4 of a mile from the beach, Nicawaves is one of the only accommodations in Popoyo that is completely surrounded by nature.  Fields covered in long grass sandwich the property, and young fruit trees blow in the wind just as wildly as the line of laundry drying in the sun.

Nicawaves, which consists of a main rental house, a room which is also available for rent, and a communal kitchen, bathroom, and shower, is rustic and low-key, focusing on the natural settings that Nicaragua has to offer.

“I just wanted a nice, quiet place for people to come and enjoy the waves and have a peaceful, intimate experience, which is closer to a real Nicaraguan experience,” said owner, Michael Dennison.  Dennison officially opened Nicawaves in February of 2009 with his wife, Isamar, in an effort to provide surfers with an affordable option to stay in Popoyo.

“Popoyo’s waves are world class, its a place where you can still find a lot of solitude,” Dennison said. “Since Popoyo is getting more popular, the waves are more crowded, but there are still days where you can have waves to yourself.”

Although Popoyo is visited by surfers from around the world, the tourist industry has not infiltrated the town as it has in San Juan del Sur, a popular surf spot to the south.  Popoyo has retained it’s small town charm, bumpy roads, wooded tracts and peaceful beaches.  San Juan del Sur is the plate to hit the bars and shop; Popoyo is for the early risers who surf before the midday heat and to lazily read a book in a hammock.  Due to it’s affordable prices, accommodating owners, and mellow character, Nicawaves is Ramble Writer’s top accommodation pick for Popoyo.
