More Travel Gear

All of these items were purchased at REI, and the prices listed are based on REI’s merchandise.  All website links, however, will direct you to the brand name’s website in order to show you detailed product information and related products under the same name.  Visit rei.com to research any of these products through the REI website.  All pictures on this entry are from rei.com.

And as I am now repeating in most of my Travel Gear entries, I will rate our equipment as I grow familiar with our purchases during the course of the trip.

SLEEPING BAGS (his & hers):
Marmot Sawtooth (his) & Angel Fire (hers)
600+ goose down insulation | 15 degrees Fahrenheit
Although we will be sleeping in the truck, we will be sleeping in our sleeping bags in the back.  Sleeping bags are easy to carry if needed, as well as easy to pack in compact spaces.  We bought matching sleeping bags that can zip together (making a giant sleeping bag).  If you are traveling with your partner and plan to do this, make sure to buy one bag that zips from the right and one to zip from the left.

PROS TO GOOSE DOWN: It compacts smaller, is warmer, loftier, and lighter.
CONS:
If goose down gets wet, it loses most of it’s insulation value until it dries out.  Fortunately, we will be in the truck and do not have to worry about this con.  Goose down is more expensive, too.
WHY 15 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT TEMPERATURE RATING?
We are traveling in the north during our traveling in the U.S. and will probably be in higher altitudes in South America.  The 15 degree rating will keep us warm, but will also be useful for the warm and tropical areas.
Price: $199.00 each

“SPECIAL” UNDERWEAR:
Exofficio Underwear
odor resistant | lightweight
| breathable | wicking | quick drying
Nick decided to get odor-resistant underwear… this could be dangerous.  Many people, including myself, have already warned him that “just because you don’t smell doesn’t mean you aren’t dirty.”  We’ll see how this goes.  If this is a product that can mask his odor, I tip my hat to the folks at Exofficio.

The packaging claims it will dry within 2-4 hours, which can be a lifesaver at times.
Price: $25.00

PANTS:
Mountain Hardwear Runout Pant (MEN’S)
Nick has worn these pants for weeks – they are now his favorite.  They are stylish canvas pants with multiple deep, front pockets, zippered rear pockets and an adjustable belt.  They also have a gusseted crotch, durable seams, and ankle cinch cords.
Price: $60.00

DOMINO’S JACKET:
Ruff Wear Canine Overcoat II
I have been worried about Domino’s threshold for cold weather – since he is a Pit Bull / Terrier, he has short fur.  When we were out today I noticed he was shivering.  Now he has a coat!  This coat is wind and water resistant with a fleece lining for warmth.
Price: $34.95 on clearance
